Coburg thrash toothless Tigers

The Coburg Lions have made it two in a row at Piranha Park, defeating the Richmond tigers by 33 points in the wet.

Coburg led from siren to siren, setting themselves up after keeping the Tigers goalless in the first three quarters while building a handy buffer.

Leaders emerged across the park, Tom Goodwin got the better of Ivan Maric, Josh Iacobaccio and Nathan Blair led down back while Peter McEvoy and Ahmed Saad lead all scorers with 2 apiece.

The Lions started the better of the two sides, capitalising on some slick work early in greasy conditions, moving the ball well by hand, taking an early 14 point lead.

The back six lead by Lehmann did their fair share of work throughout the quarter, while some 1 percenters from big man Tom Goodwin helped to keep the Tigers to a single point in an up and down opening term.

Ahmed Saad made sure to take his opportunities in his return to football, kicking consecutives to open the second, extending the Coburg lead to four majors, as the rain set in over Piranha Park.

Robbie Fox joined Saad on the list, roving and snapping truly in his first game since a concussion in round 5 against Frankston.

The Coburg midfield began to get on top around the ground, quick forward fifty entries scrambling the Richmond defence.

Credit again to the Coburg back six, with Blair Iacobaccio, Madden and Linton stepping up to again keep the tigers goalless for the second straight quarter. The home side leading by 37 points.

The visiting side showed more grit in the third term, moving the ball more freely up the ground, however were not able to trouble the scorers.

Mid way through neither side looked like breaking through with both teams missing opportunities.

Daniel Younan got some reward for his hard work, marking a quickly sharked kick in the goal square for the first and only goal of the quarter, the Lions with a 44 point lead at the last change.

It would be the Tigers again who would come out with more intent, finally breaking through for their first major of the day.

However, the lions wouldn’t let in, turning the intensity up for the final twenty minutes of the game to ensure they ran out eventual 6 goal winners.

The senior team heads to Eureka stadium next Saturday (11th June) to take on the North Ballarat Roosters.
