Hawks’ Opening Blitz Hurts Lions

Coburg’s Senior side have been defeated by 66 points against Box Hill at Box Hill City Oval in their ANZAC clash this afternoon, finishing 9.8 (62) to 20.8 (128).
After a disappointing and scoreless first term, which saw the Hawks kick 11 unanswered goals, the Lions fought on bravely.
A solid second quarter saw back-to-back goals from Hisham Kerbatieh (who went on to kick two) and James Svarc, while Nick Dodge, Christian Burgess and Cameron Holdsworth kicked singles.
A much more promising term saw Coburg’s youthful talent on display, managing to get the margin back down to 43 points at half-time.
But a quick start from Box Hill in the third term saw them kick the first three goals and push their lead back out to 62 points.
Ben Allan responded with the only Lions’ goal in the third, and Coburg continued to make it a contest coming up to three-quarter time.
In the final term, Tyler Curtis and Keenan Posar scored the final two goals for the Lions, while the Hawks added four of their own.
Jesse Corigliano led the way for disposals, recording 31 for the day including 27 uncontested possessions.
Liam Hunt was close behind notching up 27 disposals, while Nick Mellington managed 25, eight of them being clearances.
While it wasn’t the result the Lions were after, they hope to redeem themselves next week when they take on the Northern Blues in the Vicki Cleary Tribute Match at Piranha Park.
Be there on Sunday afternoon for the first bounce at 2pm, to support Coburg FC legend Phil Cleary and his family, and to get behind the Burgers.
Hear the Lions Roar!
