Ben Allan has been named the second Lion of the Round, after a promising performance in what was a disappointing loss against Box Hill Hawks last weekend.
Going into his third year at Coburg and having played all 18 games last year, the midfielder feels he is covering the ground a lot better.
“I’ve been able to get to more contests and get my hands on the ball a lot more, which is pleasing.” Allan said, recording 23 disposals (9 kicks and 14 handballs) in last week’s ANZAC clash.
This weekend will see Coburg go up against the Northern Blues in the inaugural Vicki Cleary Tribute Day; dedicated to former Coburg player and coach Phil Cleary’s sister who was murdered by her ex-boyfriend nearly 30 years ago.
Allan, who actually received the Phil Cleary Rising Star award in 2015, looks forward to being a part of Sunday’s match.
“It’s an important week for the club to raise awareness for domestic violence, and I’m making sure I prepare well so I can put in a good performance,” Allan said.
In order to get over the line as a team however, he believes it is important to get a good start.
“A lot of learning can come out of games like the Box Hill match, so hopefully we can implement the things we’ve learnt during the week to get the win,” Allan said.
“We can’t let (Northern Blues) get a jump on us, so I think it’s important for our midfielders to get their hands on the ball early and use it well to set up scoring opportunities.” he continued.
As for his main focus this season, Allan hopes to improve his running base and be more damaging with the ball in his possession.
“I’ve done a fair bit of work on improving my endurance, as well as my hand and foot skills, to ensure I’m more efficient when I have the ball,” he stated.
Head Senior Coach Peter German is also impressed with the work Allan has put in so far, describing his preseason as “outstanding”.
“He’s been able to develop his running ability further, and that’s become evident with him being able to create more scoring opportunities for the team.” German said.
The first bounce this Sunday will be at 2pm, with a minute silence held at 1:50pm to honour the life of Vicki Cleary and all other lives lost to violence.
