Lions hold Nerve against fast finishing Frankston

The Coburg lions has defeated the Frankston Dolphins by 12 points in the final home game of the season at Piranha Park.

The Lions were forced to play catch up football after the Dolphins got the early jump, a solid middle two quarters setting Coburg up, before they held their nerve through 4 lead changes in the final term to get the win.

The victory was lead from the midfield with Hunt (32 disposals) and Uysal (27 disposals) again in the best, serviced well by Mark Kovacevic in the ruck and assisted through the wings by Mattingly, Allan.

Josh Iacobaccio had 27 touches down back while Kalanj, Bailey and Mattingly all kicked their first club goals, with Saad again leading with 3 majors.

The Dolphins got the jump on Coburg from the opening bounce, kicking the first three goals of the game on the back of some poor Lions disposal.

Ozgur Uysal had the only answer for the home side who struggles to stop the run of the Dolphins, kicking with a slight breeze.

The siren beating a Lions surge forward, going in 21 points behind at the first break.

Saad and Younan opened the term with consecutive goals as Coburg began to get more hands on the ball. A lucky bounce in the centre of Piranha Park, gifting a gaol back the Dolphins.

Better transition play had Coburg only trailing by 3 points at the main change.

Debutant Jake Kalanj made sure of his first opportunity on goal to put the Lions into the lead 10 minutes into the third term, before Keenan Posar was gifted a goal off a turnover, extending the margin to 8 points.

Tom Goodwin and Mark Kovacevic began to get on top in the ruck giving first use to Hunt Allan and Uysal as the home side took a comfortable 13 point lead at the three quarter time break.

The Dolphins started the third term with greater hunger than the Lions, three goals consecutive giving them back the lead.

Ahmed Saad pulled a rabbit out of the hat with a clean snap from an offensive stoppage, before backing it up 5 minutes later to have the Lions back into the lead.

The visitors would take back the lead again, with Brandon Bailey holding his nerve twice for his first Senior goals and Zak Wunhym slotting a set shot to ice the game for Coburg.
