Lion of Round 8: Peter McEvoy

Vice-Captain Peter McEvoy has been named the Melbourne Laser & Skin Clinic Lion of the Round this week, after his impactful efforts in Saturday’s match against Northern Blues.
Kicking 4 goals and recording 14 disposals, McEvoy felt he played his role for the team and credits his improved performance to the way the boys played.
“The whole team applied pressure across the ground, which created more turnovers and forward entries especially when we controlled the game (in the final quarter),” he said.
“Overall, I think I am starting to find more consistent form as a key forward with my physical presence, my pressure, and my ability to effectively hit the scoreboard.”
Just his second season at Coburg, McEvoy has found being appointed vice-captain has had some effect on the way he strives to lead his teammates.
Along with recovering from his broken leg, he has been working on improving his on-field leadership, so he can provide as much knowledge and experience as he can to the younger boys.
“As a forward, our running patterns, positioning and work rate without the football is critical, so that’s certainly a key area where I focus on guiding my teammates.” He said.
By utilising stoppages, time between goals, and other moments during play to direct his teammates, he hopes he can help them “make the correct decisions with the ball”.
With Coburg taking on Port Melbourne this weekend, McEvoy believes maintaining pressure and physicality, while continuing to develop as a group and head in the right direction will be “critical for success”.
“With the outstanding quality of teams you are competing against in the VFL, you simply cannot afford to have significant lapses during games, which with our young team we have experienced.”
McEvoy also hopes to play his role by “providing a strong marking contest, and applying intense tackling and defensive pressure, as well as do some damage on the scoreboard”.
In the Development League, James el Moussalli was named as Lion of Round by Head Coach Paul ‘PK’ Kennedy.
El Moussalli led the leader-board for disposals, notching up 36, while laying 6 tackles and managing 9 clearances.
Hear the Lions Roar!
