Despite a hard-fought, tight start, the Lions were overrun in the second half and went down to Williamstown by 61 points at Burbank Oval this afternoon.
The Lions immediately looked to move the ball on quickly but were hurt by skills errors and turnovers, which saw Williamstown kick the opening goal. Coburg responded through goals from Tom Gleeson and Liam Brandt but the tight first term was overshadowed by an ankle injury to on debut youngster Lachie Johns. He tried valiantly to play though the injury but struggled to move freely.
Cody Mance backed himself in one-on-one contests and constantly looked to take the game on. He had 21 disposals.
Two separate Williamstown three-goal runs extended the margin in the second term, despite well-taken snaps by Tom Miles and Daniel Cooper.
Lead by hard-working and hard-hitting Josh Totino, who finished with a team-high 26 possessions, Coburg improved it’s tackling and intensity. Forward pressure also lifted and the Lions began to go forward with intent. Cooper marked strongly on the lead and converted his set shot to get his second minutes later but a Williamstown goal after the siren saw the Seagulls take a healthy 23-point lead into the main break.
The Lions were being punished in transition by a fast-moving Williamstown side that was at times wasteful in front of goal. The Lions had chances in the third term to reduce the margin but were also inaccurate in their conversion.

Coburg transitioned well at times but struggled to find a target with inside 50 entries.
Ricky Schraven (18 disposals) impressed with this second and third efforts at contests – even when outnumbered – and kicked a late goal. Michael Tang was more composed figure down back this week and always opted to drive forward from defence.
Cooper (19 possessions), and Aaron Christensen (18) were the Lions’ other major ball-winners. Robbie Fox provided good run from half back and got forward in the final term to kick a goal.
The Seagulls started where they left off in the last term and ran away to a comfortable victory.
