Round 19 Lion of the Round: Tom Goodwin

BY JACK KOVACIC

Coburg captain Tom Goodwin has been named the Post Office Hotel Lion of the Round after his strong performance in the ruck on Saturday.
Goodwin was up against Carlton listed player Levi Casboult and took it right up to him. Goodwin had 33 hitouts while also having 15 disposals, five clearances and four tackles.
He has played 14 games this year to take his career total to 63.
Although he was named as the Lions best, there was one big reason why Goodwin wasn’t satisfied with the match against the Northern Blues.
“Nothing was really pleasing about my performance personally as we still lost the game,” he said.
Coburg were on top for a lot of Saturday’s game but a five minute lapse in the third quarter enabled the Northern Blues to kick four crucial goals in a row.
“In the 3rd quarter we just went away from what we were doing, with our game plan of team defence it only takes a couple of players to go to sleep or lose concentration and good teams can expose you,” Goodwin said, “With the experience and trust which we are building, hopefully we can limit those lapses in games.”
While the scoreboard wasn’t on their side at the final siren, Coburg’s development from the early stages of the year up to this point has been clear.
“The past 2 months has been pleasing as we have been building form and playing to structure a lot more consistently than earlier in the year which is leading to better performances,” Goodwin said.
One final match remains of Coburg’s 2018 season and Goodwin says the team is eager to put in a big game and finish the season on a good note.
“We are going to throw everything we can at Geelong,” he said, “Being last game of the year we want to put in our strongest performance and take some momentum into pre-season.”
You can see Goodwin and his teammates in action for the last time in 2018 this Saturday at Piranha Park, with the first bounce at 12pm.
