Wednesday 8th July 2020
Coburg FC General Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo has provided the following response to the announcement made by the AFL that the 2020 VFL season has been cancelled.
To our players, coaches, staff, volunteers, members and club sponsors, it’s with disappointment that I write to advise you that today, following the updated lockdown measures put in place by the Victorian State Government, the AFL have made the decision to cancel the 2020 VFL season.
Whilst disappointed, we fully understand the reasons and health risks and we support this decision as right now, and always, the health and safety of the community including our players and staff is our number one priority.
Our club and the other VFL club’s that were planning on participating in the 2020 VFL season worked incredibly hard together to get to the point where only 7-10 days ago it looked very likely and positive that we’d be playing football in 2020, however the sudden and recent rise in Covid-19 cases in Melbourne has made it unsafe to do so and given we’re now in July and with a 6 week lockdown starting tonight, we believe that the decision to cancel the season is a logical one.
Whilst there’s a sense of deflation right now, I want all of our players, staff, members and sponsors to know that as a club, we will pick ourselves up and keep doing what we do at Coburg FC….we will bounce back and use this time to plan and prepare for the 2021 season, which is a season of much excitement with the redevelopment of Piranha Park due to be completed in June.
I’d like to acknowledge our players and staff who were all prepared to make great sacrifices if it meant that we could play footy in 2020. Since returning to training two weeks ago our players, coaches and staff have enjoyed the buzz and excitement of possibly being able to get back to doing what they love, we now look forward with optimism to feeling that excitement again when the current situation eases. I also want to acknowledge our club’s Board of Directors who have provided and will continue to provide great leadership and direction throughout 2020 which has been a quite remarkable year to date.
Although the 2020 VFL season is now cancelled, we are proud of our club’s effort to do anything that we could to get a season started and the reason we were able to get to this point when many thought we couldn’t, was because of the support that we had from our club partners, sponsors and members, so I thank our sponsors and members for supporting us through this challenging time.
Internally, our playing group aswell as our coaches and staff will continue to remain connected via social media platforms, our strength over the past 8-9 months has been the connection to eachother and we’ll continue to harness and grow that connection with eachother.
In closing, I encourage everyone connected to our club to stay safe, play by the rules that the Government have created and take care of yourselves and your loved ones.
As a community we will get through this together.
Should any Coburg FC member need any further information at all at this stage, please contact the club via email to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will respond to you.
