Aggressive Alana Wenban adds new dimension to Coburg’s defensive stocks

By Julia Montesano

The Coburg Football Club’s defence has been boosted with the acquisition of former Strathmore defender, Alana Wenban.

This will be the third season that Wenban will be coached by Liam Cavanagh, with the Lions coach formerly leading the way at Strathmore Football Club. Wenban followed Cavanagh to the Den, alongside fellow former Strathmore Lion, Mia Muscat. Cavanagh’s qualities as a coach made the move an easy one for Wenban.

“‘Cav’s’ probably one of the best coaches I’ve ever come across,” she said.

“Plus, the culture that we have at Coburg, it’s just something that you want to be a part of and you want to contribute to.”

The culture is certainly helping Wenban lift her standards, as she goes from playing in the Essendon District Football League to the AFL South Eastern Women’s competition this year. Even in a tough competition, Wenban believes she has what it takes to bring a bit of intimidation to the field in 2021.

“I’m a pretty defensive player,” she said.

“I do like getting body-on-body and bringing some physicality to the game. I bring a bit of roughness and a bit of competitiveness, but also a bit of a laugh on the field. I love to have a bit of chit chat and a bit of voice out there.”

This energy is something the Lions players are thriving on at training, adding to the great culture at the Den.

“The girls have been unreal,” Wenban said.

“From day dot, we’ve all just gotten on so well. The little community and family we’ve built here, it’s going to be a good one. We’ll be a team to watch out for.”

Even though Wenban described herself as a defensive player, it’s the forward line she’s craving in 2021. She has one simple goal she’s desperate to achieve this year.

“I want to kick one goal!” She said.

“Every single time that I’ve kicked a goal while playing footy, it has never been marked against my name. I kicked two goals in the same game and my coach didn’t add them to my name. It got put under someone else’s name! At the end of the season, I want to have ‘A. Wenban- one goal’. That is my one goal for the year, apart from playing a good season.”
