Burgers in partnership with the Darebin Falcons!

 As a result of the new Women’s VFL competition beginning in 2016, the Coburg Football Club are delighted to announce that following the fixture release that we have a partnership agreement with powerhouse club Darebin!

The fixture sees Piranha Park host three matches as part of double headers in conjunction with the Peter Jackson VFL Fixture for the 2016 season. These occasions include:

Saturday April 9 11am Darebin Vs Diamond Creek 2pm Coburg Vs North Ballarat

Sunday May 15 11am Darebin Vs Eastern Devils 2pm Coburg Vs Essendon

Sunday June 5 11:40am Coburg Vs Richmond 2:30pm Geelong Vs Seaford

Round one of the Women’s VFL sees our partnered side Darebin in the Grand Final rematch against Diamond Creek in the curtain raiser to our clash with the fellow stand-alone club in North Ballarat. Darebin again will be a curtain raiser in our round five match against Essendon, and this time they will be up against former fellow Premier Division side in the Eastern Devils.

Following Coburg’s round nine clash against Richmond, former Division One top four sides Geelong and Seaford will be up against each other.

Steven Reaper, the CEO of AFL Victoria was excited about the new competition for 2016.

“The rapid growth and development of the VWFL competition over recent year’s means a women’s state league in Victoria is now a reality.”

“AFL Victoria now has the ability to showcase our two senior state competitions under the one banner of the VFL, with the 12 double header games planned for this season just the beginning.”

“Fans of both competitions will have the opportunity to see some of the best male and female footballers at venues like North Port Oval, Ikon Park and Box Hill City Oval across the season, which will help showcase the great standard of football in both competitions.”

“The establishment of the VFL Women’s competition will help further develop talent across Melbourne and regional areas, providing the next step in the female talent pathway,” Reaper said.

“Players will be able to compete at a high standard on a weekly basis, helping to press their case for selection in the AFL national women’s competition next year.”

Coburg General Manager Craig Lees, said he was delighted with the partnership. “We as a football club had been in conversation with Darebin President Aleisha Leonard and Richard Dal Pos (Premiership Coach) about opportunities that were beneficial to both clubs. We are thrilled that Darebin will play two games in season 2016, as double headers. Broadly we are looking forward to developing a great partnership, one which will see our relationship strengthen on the back of community engagement, coach development, and fan creation. We are excited to working with Darebin Falcons in 2016, and developing a great relationship.”

The Fixture will consist of Melbourne playing Queensland on the MCG, Sunday May 22 at 10:10am, Western Bulldogs playing Western Australia at Etihad Stadium, Sunday June 5 at 12:40pm and Melbourne playing the Western Bulldogs on September 2 or 3 with the venue to be confirmed.

The top four teams at the end of the home and away season will compete in finals, starting on August 27th and 28th. The VFL Women’s Grand Final will be played on the weekend of September 17th 18th.
