CAPTAIN EDWARDS COMMITS!

By Mathew Asciak

The Coburg Football Club is excited to announce that the captain of the inaugural season for the women’s team, Maddie Edwards, has re-committed to the club for the 2022 season.

Given the honour of leading the club in the inaugural season of the women’s program, Edwards looks forward to building on the strong foundations the club has built in 2021.

“It was a no brainer for me to sign again with Coburg, our success and culture built in our inaugural year made it an obvious choice to re-sign,” Edwards said.

Finishing fourth in the Best and Fairest, the talented midfielder averaged 12 disposals and 6 tackles a game, playing all 10 matches for the Lions.

At just 20 years of age, Edwards took the additional responsibility of captaincy in her stride, showing maturity beyond her years.

Reflecting on her first season as captain, Edwards believed her ability to enable confidence within her teammates was a key learning as her development as a leader in 2021.

“I feel I improved as in helping people feel confident about their footy abilities and helped them see how they were really improving,” Edwards explained.

A sentiment that is held by many of her teammates, Edwards emphasised the importance of creating a great culture within the football club.

“My biggest learning really taught me that having a united front and team with a great culture really is the best part about playing footy – it made me feel so lucky to be a part of not only a successful team, but one with great people,” Edwards said.

Senior coach Liam Cavanagh expects Edwards to continue the positive development in 2022.

“Maddie is someone who continually improves whether than be in season, off season or during the season, so we’re just going to see her get better and better,” Cavanagh said.

“We are really going to put a focus on her game next year; her leadership was incredible this year and really celebrated… but we think she’s got talents that we can take further and further so that she’s becoming a weapon the field as well as an incredible leader.”

“Her development as a leader was essentially faultless … I’ve never heard someone get such high praise for how they operate and she’s clearly mature beyond her years.”

“We’re really proud of the development she’s made, and really excited to see what the next few years hold for her in that space.”
