Chad Owens joins the Lions as an Assistant Coach.

As previously seen, the Coburg Football Club have finalised its football department for the 2019 season with Chad Owens coming on board as an Assistant Coach where he will be responsible for the midfield.
Owens was previously a back to back premiership coach with QAFL powerhouse Palm Beach Currumbin, and while he already had committed to them as their senior coach for 2019 again, the opportunity offered at VFL level was too good for him to pass up.
He completed his level three coaching course with Senior Coach Leigh Adams throughout the course of 2018. Owens took over as Senior Coach of Palm Beach in 2015, having joined them in 2014 as an assistant coach. He had previously spent time at Labrador as an assistant coach in the early years of the NEAFL competition. Owens also represented Broadbeach & Palm Beach Currumbin in the QAFL.
Originally from Wodonga where he played with the Raiders, Owens is a teacher by trade and taught at Palm Beach Currumbin High School, where he was involved with their Football Academy. Owens relocated to Melbourne recently and will be teaching at Parade College’s Preston Campus.
With ambitions of going onto a higher level of coaching, Owens is wrapt to have been offered this opportunity, and is looking forward to the season ahead.
“I’m just looking forward to the higher level experience and being exposed to what’s current and what everyone’s tried to copy at our level in term of AFL and getting to play against those good players and coach against really high standard coaches is something that really excites me. “
“Obviously the big challenge for me is the weather- in Queensland we played one wet game a year so I’m going to have to adapt to that style a little bit & how I go about it, it’s not as heavily contested footy in Queensland cause of the dry tracks,” Owens said.
Adams was delighted to have offered Owens this opportunity.
“I’m excited to have Chad on board for 2019, as he brings a wealth of experience as a two-time QAFL Premiership Coach, and more importantly has great character and will fit in well with our clubs values,” said Adams.
We welcome Chad and his wife Beatrice, as well as his two children Luis & Connor to our Club.
