Coburg star Lowson returns for 2021!

The Coburg Football Club is thrilled with the news that it’s electrifying small forward Sam Lowson will return to the club for 2021 as it begins a new era in the new VFL and East Coast tier two competition.

His arrival at Piranha Park in 2017 came after a promising season with East Ringwood in 2016 and after showing promising signs in the Development League he made his VFL debut in round eight of 2017, quickly proving he belonged at VFL Level managing ten games for the season. He made further strides in 2018 with 13 games and 19 goals, with opposition clubs beginning to take notice of his potential.

Lowson made a very fast start to the 2019 season with 13 goals from the opening seven games and was widely tipped to be the number one pick in the mid year rookie draft, however two days before the draft unfortunately hurt his foot/ankle quite severely, ruling him out any prospect of him being drafted. He would return late in the season and went onto receive an invite to the state combine.

Lowson looked set for a big 2020 after the disappointments of 2019, however it all got brought to a halt, with the VFL season being postponed, and then cancelled following the COVID19 Pandemic and the enforced lockdowns.

Knowing he had to play in 2020 to remain in the sights of AFL recruiters, Lowson was then fortunate enough to head across to South Australia where he would spend the second half of the 2020 SANFL season with Woodville-West Torrens. After three games in the reserves where he managed eight goals, he finally broke through for his senior debut in September. Although he had a tough initiation into the SANFL, Lowson cemented his spot in the Eagles side by kicking 4 goals against West Adelaide, then backed it up with three goals against Central District a week later, only to suffer from a knee injury in the same game.

While his season looked gone, he returned to kick 2 goals in the preliminary final win over South Adelaide, and played a crucial role as a pressure forward in the Premiership win over North Adelaide, kicking a goal and setting up many more.

GM Sebastian Spagnuolo is excited at the prospect of having the small forward back in red and blue in 2021.

“Everyone connected to the Coburg Football Club will be feeling so excited that Sammy will be back in Lions colours in 2021 and to help the club start positively in the new look competition that we’ll be playing in. Going into his 5th year with the club, Sam is a senior member of our team and club and is respected and loved by everyone and he’s extremely excited at the prospect of playing with his existing and new teammates. We are thrilled that he’s on board for 2021”

Over the next few days and weeks the club will continue to announce both re-singings and more new player signings as it prepares to succeed in 2021.
