Exciting ruck/ forward Sophie Damon is the latest player to officially join Coburg Football Club’s inaugural women’s team.
Damon, 20, boasts impressive experience, having played for the Murray Bushrangers, Victoria Country and Richmond’s VFLW in just five years of playing Australian Rules football.
After a difficult 2019 season where she only managed three games due to injury, Damon said she was attracted to join the Lions for a “fresh start”.
“I wasn’t sure if I was even going to continue to play football,” she said.
“I just wanted to get back to enjoying playing footy and remember why I started playing in the first place.”
Damon already feels at home at Coburg, despite her home actually being two hours away in Shepparton. The 20-year-old is accustomed to the travel, having taken the four-hour round-trip three times a week for footy training and games back in Year 12. When she was recruited to Richmond’s VFLW program, the talented ruck/ forward made the move to Melbourne, but has since returned home to be with family and focus on studying osteopathy. While this travel was difficult at the time, she doesn’t mind the long trip now. However, she is looking forward to moving back to Melbourne in the near future to get back to focusing on football.
“This group makes the trip to training worth it,” Damon said.
“It’s an awesome feeling to want to come to footy.”
What also contributes to her rekindled love for the game is the people around her at Coburg. In just six sessions on the track, the Lions women have already formed an infectious bond and enjoy being in each other’s company.
“I feel like no-one really feels secluded,” Damon said.
“There’s no cliques, we’re all just one. From the get-go, it felt like a team. We were all one and united. As soon as I signed, I got all these text messages, it was a great feeling. The club’s really welcoming and I love it.”
