Development Lions Crowned “King of the Jungle”

The Development Lions have roared home and defeated Werribee Tigers by 58 points in their NAIDOC Week clash this afternoon, kicking 11 goals to 3 in a strong second half.
Holding onto the lead at every break, Coburg’s 4 goal blitz at the start of the third term gave them the advantage, finishing the day 16.16 (112) to 8.6 (54).
The first quarter saw Coburg miss some opportunities to get in front early, kicking four behinds while Werribee added two straight goals.
With the goals going back and forth throughout the second term, the Burgers came out firing after half-time.
Booting four unanswered goals to push the margin out to 26 points at three-quarter time, the Coburg goals didn’t stop there.
Adding another five to the scoreboard, the Lions managed to keep Werribee goal-less in the final term, with quick hands and clever kicking to maintain possession.
James Svarc led the goal-kicking with four, followed by Ricky Schraven with three, and George Romios and Jean-Luc Velissaris both with two each.
In terms of major ball-getters, the Coburg midfielders couldn’t be stopped with Alex Mioni recording 27, Michael Ercolano managing 26 and Matt Merlo with 24.
With just one spot separating Werribee and Coburg on the ladder before the game, it was a tough battle that saw Coburg come out on top.
Next week the Development Lions have another bye, and will take on Sandringham in two weeks time.
Hear the Lions Roar!
