Coburg has signed the reigning EDFL Rising Star Bailey Ryan for the 2022 VFL season.

Ryan made an impact for Hillside in his first full season of senior football, playing all 12 matches and kicking 29 goals.

There were several impressive performances this year for the 20-year-old, in Round 5 Ryan booted seven goals to lead his team to victory against Westmeadows, while in Round 10 he managed five majors against Taylors Lakes. There was just one match in 2021 where Ryan did not kick a goal.

Ryan is a former Western Jet having played nine matches in the NAB League in 2019.

Alongside his rising star award, Ryan was also named on the half forward flank in the 2021 EDFL Division One Team of the Year.

Ryan said he is excited to be signing with the Lions for 2022.

“I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to play for a VFL club with such great history and to test my ability at the highest possible level,” he said.

“It’s very exciting to see the direction the club is heading toward and can’t wait to resume training alongside my new teammates.”

Club General Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo said the club had known about Ryan for some time.

“He initially did some preseason training with us in the lead-up to the 2021 season and we invited him back for this preseason following very strong local form with Hillside in 2021,” he said.

“Bailey can find his hands on the ball and get into really good positions, and we are keen to work on his overall game which will hopefully provide him with the tools to become a good VFL footballer too.”
