ELLIS RETURNS FOR 2022!!!

By Daniel Foley

Corey Ellis will be a Lion again in 2022 after re-signing with the club.

Ellis had an injury interrupted season playing seven matches for Coburg in his first year at the club.

Ankle issues throughout the season in addition with byes due to COVID restrictions meant that Ellis never played two consecutive weeks in a row.

His best performance for the season came in Round 12 against Carlton, where he had 18 touches, four tackles and a goal.

Ellis said he was excited to be re-signing and for the upcoming pre-season.

“There are so many quality people at the club and it’s a very enjoyable place to be at the moment, so I’m very happy to be there and excited for next year,” he said.

“Obviously a frustrating and interrupted year for everyone [in 2021], but I think it has made our group stronger. I’m hoping that we can have a full pre-season and season because I think we’re building something special.”

Senior coach Andrew Sturgess said he was stoked that Ellis was re-signing and was looking forward to a strong pre-season for the midfielder.

“I feel for Corey cause he just couldn’t get a good run at it this year not only due to the hiccups and speedhumps that everybody faced with the stop start nature of the season,” he said.

“I think what we’re gonna see from Corey next year and we saw it in glimpses this year is just a greater level of consistency and hopefully he gets a better run at it with his body.”

“We’ve got a lot of really good ball winners, guys that can go and hunt the football and I think Corey’s got a really good balance of both where he can go and get the football and be really creative and put his teammates into space. But also if he does get used on the outside of that contest, he’s got really good foot skills and decision making that sets us up really well.”
