Following the Lions intraclub match over the weekend, Coburg has added a 46th player to the 2020 list.
Jesse Johnson is 23-years old and joins the Lions in 2020 from the Castlemaine Football Club in the Bendigo Football League.
Originally from Tasmania, Jesse is no stranger to the VFL having been on Port Melbourne’s list as well as playing development league football with the Borough in 2017.
In 2018 and 2019 Johnson was a mainstay in Castlemaine’s backline, although at 196cms he has the versatility to play forward and also has the agility and speed to play on the wing.
Johnson has been striving for another opportunity to play in the VFL this season.
“It means so much more than I ever thought to be offered a contract, my goal was to get back on a VFL list in 2020 and to play some good football, so I’m very grateful to Coburg for this opportunity.
“I started training after Christmas, and as tough as training is, I have enjoyed it a lot. Getting to know the boys and learning the Coburg way has been awesome.”
Johnson is looking forward to developing his game further this year, and the versatile player will adapt to any position come gameday.
“Getting consistency into my game and continuing to work on my tank and ability to compete week in and week out.
“I am happy to play where I am needed, whether that be back, forward, or wing. I am looking to thank the club for the opportunity, and hopefully, I can repay the favour by playing some good footy in 2020.”
Coburg General Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo is delighted with the recruitment of the most recent Lion.
“Jesse did some of the pre-seasons with Footscray, and when he realised that opportunities with them might be limited due to the depth of the Western Bulldogs, he decided to come across and work hard to earn a spot with us.
“We’re happy for Jesse that an opportunity to be on Coburg’s list has been offered to him, he’s worked hard for the chance, and his form in recent match simulation and the intraclub has nudged a contract his way. From here we look forward to Jesse now putting his best foot forward to earn a spot in our practice match squads.”
Coburg takes on Box Hill this Saturday at La Trobe University with the game starting at 10.30 am.
