Lions 2020 VFL Fixture Released

The 2020 season will have a very different feel to it with the Lions out and on the road due to the redevelopment of Piranha Park.

The VFL fixture has now been released with the Lions having 9 “home” and 9 away games in 2020.

Of the 9 “home” games, Coburg will have 5 games at Highgate, Craigieburn, and 1 each at Ballarat, Werribee, Melton and Preston.

The Lions will face each of Collingwood, Frankston, Sandringham and North Melbourne twice in 2020.

The home and away season kicks off on Saturday 4th April with a trip to Geelong.

The traditional Coburg v Box Hill Anzac Day game will be on a one year hiatus with Coburg facing Sandringham on Anzac Day weekend which is also a live channel 7 game for the Lions.

Other interesting fixture features are:

Round 2 Good Friday footy vs North Melbourne

Round 5 VFL footy returns to Ballarat

Round 13 Coburg brings VFL footy to Melton for the first time

Round 14 Coburg ventures to Moorabbin for the first time since we played Moorabbin in the old VFA in 1963

Coburg FC General Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo said of the club’s 2020 fixture

“It was the best that we could have hoped for given the circumstances and a lot of work went into obtaining a suitable venue for each of our 9 home games in 2020.

Ideally, we’d have liked more games closer to Coburg but with the lack of VFL standard facilities it just wasn’t possible.  Preston’s ground is at maximum use with the Blues, Knights and Darebin Falcons playing there so we couldn’t get into Preston as much as we’d have liked to keep our members close to Coburg. We are really excited by the challenges that 2020 will deliver, and our players and coaches are ready to face them head on.”

“We are really thankful of the fantastic relationship that we have with the Calder Cannons and to have 5 games at Highgate, Craigieburn gives us the edge of having somewhat of a home base which we’ll look to take advantage of. We have many former Cannons on our list so it’s a very familiar setting for us.”

“We had the opportunity to bring VFL football to non-VFL venues such as Melton which will host it’s first ever VFL game in round 13 and we are also proud to bring VFL footy back to Ballarat on the 2nd of May with Collingwood heading over with us.”

On the club’s current membership position, Spagnuolo added “What we need now more than ever is for our members to get to games and really create a home game atmosphere for our players.  In 2019 we had the 2nd highest membership base in the VFL, why can’t we go one better in 2020?

2020 will be a very exciting year and we want our supporters to play a large part in it.”
