Lions lock away football department for 2020

THE Coburg Football Club has finalised its coaching structure for the 2020 VFL season, with some new faces arriving at Piranha Park.

Midfield Coach Adrian Pilgrim

The Club is pleased to welcome Adrian Pilgrim on board as the club’s new Midfield Coach. Pilgrim joins the Lions after two seasons with the Western Jets in the NAB League and has a distinguished playing career in metro and country football.

Forwards coach Michael Still

Michael Still joins the club from Eltham as our Forwards Coach and his experience from his time at AFL level with Essendon aswell as his experiences as a SANFL Premiership player with West Adelaide and Collingwood VFL leadership group member will definitely be beneficial to our playing group.

As Backline Coach in 2020, Mark Hounslow, like Adrian Pilgrim, also joins us from the Western Jets where he led the Forward Line in 2019.  Mark brings with him playing and assistant coaching experience from the strong Geelong Football League.

Backline Coach Mark Hounslow

Collingwood 2010 Premiership player and Life Member Brent Macaffer also joins the club for season 2020 as a part time Development Coach and will work closely with our playing group both on and off field. Since retiring from the AFL, Brent has worked at Collingwood in the Player Welfare department and has been playing football at Eltham with Michael Still.

In 2020, the club will also have two Football Department Assistants in Daniel Fiteni and Luke LoBello who will work closely with our line coaches to assist with training and on matchday.  Both Daniel and Luke are up and coming coaches who are keen to be involved at VFL level and develop their coaching further.

The final staffing football department announcement is that of Brendan Murray.  Brendan has been a mentor of Senior Coach Andrew Sturgess for a number of years and in 2020 Brendan will be our Coaching Educator in a mentoring role. Brendan is highly regarded within the education industry, founding several sch
ools for disadvantaged youth and consulting on major educational issues and projects all over Australia. Brendan will be a valuable asset in assisting our coaching staff to create a highly engaging learning environment to build the capacity of our players.

Upon finalising the coaching structure for 2020 Coburg FC GM Sebastian Spagnuolo said:

Football Department Assistant Luke Lo Bello

“As a club we are really happy with the support that we’ve been able to put around Andrew Sturgess and our playing group.  We feel like we have a great mix of backgrounds from educators (Adrian and Brendan), to fantastic playing and coaching experience (Brent and Michael) and a person like Mark who as a tradie and business owner he’ll have many relatable traits and experiences to our playing group.

Football Department Assistant Daniel Fiteni

To be in a position to attract someone like Brent Macaffer is also a major boost for our club, we’ve heard fantastic things about the work Brent did at Collingwood and recently with Eltham so we’re really excited to have his experience around the group.

Having Brendan Murray is also a major coup for our club. With a young coaching group it’s really positive that we’ve got someone as experienced as Brendan is providing strategies, feedback and experiences to impart on our coaching group.  Brendan has worked with AFL players and coaching in recent years as a mentor and having a person of his calibre at our club is a blessing, we are very fortunate to have someone of Brendan’s skillset join our football department.

Luke and Daniel are two young local coaches that wanted to take their coaching to another level and we are pleased to be able to provide them the opportunity and tools to help them whilst also surrounding our players with more people of high quality who share our club values.

Senior Coach Andrew Sturgess with Leadership Group Member Luke Bunker

It’s been a thorough process (getting the right people in) and we’re really excited to hit the preseason full of belief in our people from players, coaches, staff and volunteers, we have a fantastic team of staff in 2020 which promises to be a very exciting year.”
