The Coburg Lions have finalised its playing list for the 2020 VFL season.
For the commencement of the 2020 VFL season, the Lions have this week lodged their 45 man list with 11 players making their first ever VFL list and a total of 18 new faces joining the 27 Lions returning from season 2019.
Of the 18 new Lions, 7 players have been previously listed in the VFL at other clubs, some bringing with them added experience playing at the level including VFL finals and premiership winning experience.
Coburg FC General Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo expressed his delight with the lodgement of the playing list.
“We are really bouyed and excited by what’s been a succesful off season for the club. When Andrew Sturgess was appointed as Senior Coach in September 2019, we immediately identified the strengths of the existing playing list and set out to target players that we expected would compliment those that we already had but also bring further skills and attributes to our playing group.
Our recruiting strategy for 2020 was made alot easier by the fact that over 60% of the 2019 playing list was re-committed to our club, this meant that our recruiting focus could be more targeted for the final 18 spots.
To bring in top end talent such as Callum Moore, Jacob Ballard and Tom Silvestro (all from Richmond), even though Callum is already back into the AFL with Carlton, we are ecstatic at the boost to the club’s leadership and experience that we’ve acheieved during the preseason. For players like those to choose our club was very reaffirming that our club’s plan for the future and desire to acheive success was strong enough for these guys and all other new recruits.
Another key focus of the off season was to address the depth of our key position and ruckman stocks and with the addition of Athan Tsialtas, Kyle Galloway, Aaron Clarke, Cooper Sharman, Josh Hotchkin and Jesse Johnson will go a long way to providing our coaches with a suitable amount of options going forward and competition for spots in the team will be hotly contested.
Even though we as a club have added more VFL and senior football experience to our list for 2020, we are also proud of our club’s ability to continue to create VFL opportunities for NAB league graduates with a total of 7 NAB league 2019 graduates joining us for 2020.
Our exciting recruiting period added to the re-commitment of all of the returning players has many people feeling very enthusiastic about our club’s on field prospects in 2020. With the recent development involving the delayed start to the 2020 VFL season, we eagerly await the amended fixture and look forward to our members getting to see our players in action again”
