Coburg has finalised its women’s coaching group for 2022, adding a number of new faces to support Liam Cavanagh for the team’s second season.

Alex Volk and Tom Chitsos join the club as assistant coaches looking after the forward line and midfield respectively.

Abby Glascott, who played three matches for the club in 2021, is taking an off-field role for next season as Assistant Coach (Backline).

Ruzena May returns as a Development Coach but will also play for the team in 2022.

Blake Wadley who was an assistant coach last season has been appointed as Development/Reserves Team Coach. He is joined by Justin Beach who comes to the club as Development/Reserves Team Assistant Coach.

Volk arrives at Coburg from the St Kilda Sharks and has experience in teaching which Cavanagh believes will provide a different skillset and benefit the forward line.

“She’s got a really strong background in teaching as well which is always beneficial as far as passing on the game plan and being able to present the information to players in a way that they’ll take up and learn,” Cavanagh said.

“Alex is a really good player and a really good coach as well so she’s kind of a full package for us.”

Chitsos works in game development at AFL Victoria and has experience coaching his own team at junior level for Taylors Lakes over the last few years.

Cavanagh said that Chitsos was a highly recommended appointment.

“Since Tom has been in the program, he’s been really good, he’s excited, he’s evaluating what we currently do and starting to put his own fingerprint on things now,” he said.

“Tom’s going to look after our senior midfield and really excited just to see the spin that Tom puts on it, he’s a really good communicator, got a really good footy brain, so excited to see what he can do there.”

Beach joins the Lions from St Kilda City where he has coached girls and boys football. He also has experience working in strength and conditioning at high levels such as St Kilda’s AFLW team.

“He’s got really good exposure to good programs which we know will translate into his ability to coach and lead on the track,” he said.

“He’s got a really broad set of skills so sometimes it’ll be defensive, sometimes it’ll be midfield, sometimes it’ll be offensive, so his flexibility and depth of experience is going to be really valuable for us.”
