Lions surf to victory over Dolphins

By Lili-may Corley

In their second round, the Coburg Lion’s Womens Team continues to make history and were able to best the Frankston Dolphins in a nail biting match at Skybus Stadium.

Lauren Sims kicked our first goal very early on, which then began the momentous effort from the team, lifting spirits and determination.

With a low scoring and heavily defensive focus in the first half, Coburg lead by 1 goal and 1 behind at half time. Frankston were extremely comprehensive and pushed the Lions hard, having higher median tackles and inside 50’s after the first two quarters.

Hannah Fosbrooke was an obvious stand out throughout the match, and dominated in the middle of the ground – ultimately conquering the majority of contested marks and tackles.

Another triumphant player, Kristelle Vanderwolf, held strong in centre field and up forward – supporting her team mates and consistently moving the play down to our goals.

The Frankston Dolphins proved a worthy and tough opponent, keeping the ball in their forward half for a good majority of the match, and testing the defensive side of the Lion’s.

In the second half of the match, every player representing Coburg Lion’s boosted their game and their spirit, and built a consistent and strong side, allowing Frankston 3 goals and 3 behinds in their second half.

Amy Mitchner held almost impenetrable as full back, keeping the ball out of the goals and pushing the play forward. Amy stayed tight to her opponent, successfully keeping them scoreless in the last quarter.

Come three quarter time, the Lions led 35 to 21, after 3 quick and consecutive goals to set them ahead. The game quickly moved into our offensive field, where it stayed for a good majority of the second half.

Our inside 50’s quickly increased from 11 to 13, where Simone Craig and Jaime Nankville were able to take plays head first and keep the ball in their territory up forward.

Their second half saw a massive improvement in Coburg’s game and energy, having moved the ball with much more accuracy and purpose.

In the 4th and final quarter of the game, Coburg managed to double Frankston’s inside 50’s and full control was then in the Lions’ hands.

Regina Said maintained a strong presence in half forward, opening up space for her teammates and allowing for another goal to round off the game.

Overall, it was the hunger and fire from our Senior Womens team that lead them to a victorious win and will continue to guide them in the right direction. It was magnificent to finally hear Coburg’s updated song, and we cannot wait to hear it again soon.
