The Coburg Football Club is thrilled to announce that Max Thompson has joined his older brother Charlie Thompson on the Lions’ VFL playing list for 2022.

In a shortened NAB League season, the 18-year-old played six matches for the Oakleigh Chargers in 2021 and kicked two goals.

Charlie Thompson joined the club in November 2020 from Richmond VFL after also previously playing for Oakleigh. Charlie had an impressive 2021 season for the club, becoming a mainstay of the team’s line-up, playing 10 matches, averaging 22.5 touches and kicking 10 goals.

Max Thompson said that the possibility of playing in the same side as his brother was exciting.

“Coming down to start with Coburg at training was a bit daunting but I could immediately feel the family aspect of the club and just how welcoming everyone was, it’s great to be at a club where you feel valued,” he said.

“To potentially pull on the Lions jumper would be something very special and for that to be with my brother would be even sweeter, 2022 is a very exciting year for the Coburg Football Club.”

Club General Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo said that Thompson had a competitive drive as a player.

“After some NAB League and VAFA footy with Oakleigh and Old Carey respectively in 2021, along with school football form with Carey Grammar, Max was invited to trial with us,” he said.

“What we’ve seen, much like his older brother Charlie, is a young man with terrific work rate and a highly competitive nature and we’re really excited to have Max join the club for season 2022.”
