The Coburg Football Club is pleased to announce the signing of Nathan Mullenger-McHugh from the Box Hill Hawks for the 2021 season of the VFL /East Coast Football League competition.
The signing of Mullenger-McHugh at 197cms will bolster the Lions forward half and goalkicking power but also has the ability to hold a key defensive position.
Following his time with eastern ranges in the then-TAC Cup, Nathan was drafted by the Western Bulldogs with pick 16 in the 2016 rookie draft.
In his time at the Whitten Oval, he continued to play predominantly as a key forward, managing 29 games and 18 goals in the VFL and left the Dogs at the end of the 2018 season to join Box Hill in the VFL where he played in 2019 and was set to play for them again in 2020 with a total of 48 VFL games and 27 goals. In 2020, Nathan was also in the Hawks leadership group.
Upon signing with the club, Nathan said “The thing I’m looking forward to the most about joining Coburg is the opportunity to join a young, growing, connected and hungry football club. Being a part of a standalone club gives me the opportunity to play with guys I train with during the week with more of a traditional football club structure.”
When asked what he was most excited about in 2021, Nathan said “Obviously after missing the 2020 season due to COVID I’m just hanging to play the game and compete again. Hardest thing to replicate is the competitive nature of the game and it’s something I really enjoy. “
“I’m also looking forward to getting to know the group and play alongside some fresh faces.”
“I want to cement a spot up forward. I’ve played as a utility in the past and this season I am aiming to develop my forward craft more extensively. I’m looking forward to working with the existing talent Coburg has in their forward line. There are some exciting players down there and as group I think we will have a successful 2021 season.”
GM Sebastian Spagnuolo was pleased to have secured the key forward’s services for the new look competition in 2021 saying “We are really excited about Nathan joining the club. As a footballer he’ll provide another focal point in attack to complement another former Hawk, Peter McEvoy and he’s another high-quality person that we’re bringing into our football club that is eager and excited to see us improve and climb the ladder”
“We set out to bolster our forward line for the 2021 season and Nathan along with fellow new signing Luke Nelson will go some way to achieving that goal.”
Over the next few days and weeks, the club will continue to announce both re-singings and more new player signings as it prepares to succeed in 2021.
