Coburg has completed its squad of 42 players for the upcoming 2022 VFL season with the signing of Flynn Gentile from the Calder Cannons.

The 18-year-old played eight matches and co-captained Calder in the COVID interrupted 2021 season, averaging 23.8 disposals, 5.6 marks and 3.1 tackles per game. Flynn also played senior football for his local club, Airport West in the Essendon District Football League.

Gentile made his Cannons debut as a 16-year-old in 2019 and went on to play seven matches that year.

The midfielder joins fellow Calder teammates from last season Harry Andronaco and Riley Mason at Piranha Park.

Gentile said he is extremely excited to be joining the club.

“I am most looking forward to playing at a club that not only loves their footy and takes that seriously but also enjoys building strong relationships within the group. I believe that the closer the group is the better the results will be come game day,” he said.

“To the Lions members you can expect my all every-time I step onto the ground. My strengths are my running to create space and footy smarts to either give myself or teammates the best chance to win the footy.”

Coburg General Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo said the club was looking forward to working with Gentile.

“He’s a player that can play through the midfield and we will also work with him to develop in other areas of his game,” he said.

“Prior to Christmas he was training with Essendon VFL so although he’ll be meeting his Coburg teammates for the first time on January 10th when training resumes, we are confident in his ability to fit in and train hard immediately.”
