Joining Sophie Damon in Coburg’s Ruck/Forward set-up for 2021 will be former Darebin Falcon Tash Phipps.

Phipps has already shown tremendous promise, having only played one season at the Falcons after a season-ending ACL injury in just her second game of the sport in 2017. However, once she got back to playing the game she loved, she couldn’t get enough. Now, Phipps is excited for a new challenge at the Coburg Football Club.

“I think it’s just so exciting to be a part of an inaugural team,” she said.

“Given the men’s success in the VFL, it’s exciting to be part of a club that has those same aspirations for the women’s team. They put the same amount of support and development into their players for the women as they do in the men’s competition.”

The women’s team resourcing includes training at the fabulous Fitzroy Stars Football Club during pre-season and having a star-studded panel of coaches, led by former Strathmore coach, Liam Cavanagh. Although for Phipps, it’s the players who have really helped her reignite her love for football after the devastating knee injury she suffered three years ago.

“It’s such a beautiful group of people,” she said.

“It’s so fun to get to know people. We’ve got a really diverse group, in both age and experience. It’s a really fun culture that we’re developing there. It’s already so much fun to get out there every session. Everyone pumps each other up.”

With aspirations to play in the VFLW, the Lions are already on the right track, having been accepted into the ultra-competitive and professional AFL South Eastern Women’s Competition. Phipps is looking forward to testing herself against the league’s experienced calibre of players.

“I’m really excited to play a higher level of football and to really push myself to develop as a player and see what we can achieve as a team,” she said.

“I think it will be really exciting to see if we can match these teams and hopefully beat them.”
