Promising key tall becomes a Lion for 2019.

The Coburg Football Club is pleased to announce the signing of Liam Whelan for the 2019 season.
Whelan spent the 2018 season with North Melbourne and although he didn’t manage a game at VFL Level, he managed 15 games with VAFA powerhouse Old Trinity where he played as a key defender.
Whelan is seen as a raw, developing prospect who can play at either end of the ground, and was brought to the attention of North Melbourne following 52 goals from 10 games with VAFA club Aquinas in 2017. An East Ringwood junior, he would also represent the VAFA in the International Rules series in Ireland in 2017.
Whelan possesses great speed and athleticism for his size and can play either as a key defender or forward, and is excited to come to Piranha Park for the opportunity.
Coburg FC General Manager  Sebastian Spagnuolo was pleased to have secured Whelan’s signature for the 2019 season.
“Liam was unable to get VFL opportunities at North Melbourne in 2018 due to their AFL listed key position players being healthy and available for VFL selection most weeks. Liam will give our side great flexibility as a defender and forward which will be a great asset to him and the team moving forward.”
“We welcome Liam to our club and our coaches can’t wait to get to work with him.”
