Stone & Mitchell Russell latest list additions as the Lions etch towards list finalisation

Coburg’s 2018 list is another step further to becoming complete for 2018, with the addition of Dylan Stone from Wangaratta Rovers, & Max Mitchell Russell from Port Melbourne Colts.
Stone has managed 58 games of Senior O&M football since debuting with Rovers late in 2014. Establishing himself as a senior player in 2015, Stone would go on to represent the O&M in 2016 along with James Svarc & Jay O’Donoghue in a huge win over the Hampden FL. 2017 would see him take out the Bob Rose Medal as his sides Best & Fairest which would then provide him with the motivation to go onto testing himself at the highest level possible. Despite only joining the club for preseason in January 2018 having come off femoral osteotomy surgery in November, Stone has impressed the coaches throughout his phase in rehab as he nears closer to a full recovery. Stone comes with good reviews from former Coburg & Wangaratta Rovers stalwart Laurie Burt.
As he begins to train with the main group, Stone is excited about the opportunities of VFL Football in 2018.
“I was very keen after last year to take the next step and add a few strings to my bow, I’m looking forward to playing at the next level and playing with a new bunch of blokes,” Stone said.
GM Seb Spagnuolo was pleased to have secured the signing of the O&M interleague representative.
“Dylan comes from Wangaratta with some fantastic feedback, and although he’s coming off some pretty serious surgery, the way he’s attacked his rehab has been really impressive. We can’t wait to see Dylan in action soon,” Spagnuolo said.
Mitchell-Russell is a key forward who managed 19 goals from 11 games in Division One of the Southern Football Netball League in 2017. After suffering from a broken wrist early in the year, he would return mid-year where he would prove to be one of his sides best players, justified by a seven-goal performance in a game late in 2017. A South Melbourne Districts Junior, Mitchell-Russell managed a year of TAC Cup with the Sandringham Dragons in 2016, however would ultimately find it hard to consolidate a spot with the eventual TAC Cup Premiers as they regained their players from School Football & Underage Representative commitments. Mitchell-Russell came to the club with strong recommendation by President Kevin Breen.
Eligible for 23rd man duties, Mitchell-Russell is also excited for the 2018 season.
“I’m looking forward to playing with a new bunch of blokes that I’ve never played with before, & the challenge that VFL Football presents. I decided to come to Coburg because I know we’re a very young team with a good culture, and I wanted to be part of a tight knight group,” Mitchell-Russell said.
Spagnuolo was also pleased to have secured the young Key Forwards services.
“Max is a young, raw key forward type and will be a pretty handy VFL player for us in the future. He presents well at the football, has strong hands and is a good set shot on goal,” Spagnuolo added.
