Coburg continues to excite it’s members with the news that Charlie Thompson is the latest player to join the club. Charlie joins the Lions from Richmond’s VFL program where he was a teammate of Jacob Ballard, Tom Silvestro and another new signing Luke Nelson.
Thompson joined Richmond’s VFL team for the 2018 season, after spending his TAC Cup graduate year with the Oakleigh Chargers and playing school football with Carey Grammar.
He managed 6 games for three goals in his first year with the Tigers, including an impressive debut against North Melbourne that season where he managed 22 disposals. Thompson would find himself in and out of the side due to Richmond’s strong depth at AFL level, but was the 23rd man in both finals Richmond played in. Thompson also that year captained the VAFA Under 19 team, and also managed 15 goals from 12 games for Old Carey, playing in their losing Premier B Grand Final team.
He would go on to add nine games in 2019 for six goals, his best coming in an early season win over Port Melbourne, but was unable to break into the team after July as the Tigers marched on to take home the premiership. He spent most of the season with Wangaratta Rovers managing 13 goals from 9 games.
With Richmond’s VFL program finished after the AFL announced no AFL listed players were to be taking part in any state league competitions due to COVID-19, Thompson agreed to terms with the Lions for the proposed revised 2020 season, but it never came to fruition due to the second Victorian lockdown taking place.
Thompson can’t wait to meet the majority of his new teammates and reunite again with a few old ones.
“For me, joining Coburg was all about the direction in which the club is heading. Everybody that I spoke to including Andrew, Seb and some of the leaders, were so motivated to take the club back to playing finals and being a powerhouse club in the VFL. I also loved that the conversations weren’t just about winning games of footy, it was about people and culture. That was really evident when chatting with Sturg and was one of the main reasons for me making the move.”
“Given the year we’ve all had in 2020, the thing I’m most looking forward to is winning some games of footy. There is nothing quite like the 30 minutes after a win where you can enjoy the company of teammates, coaches and staff. 2021 is going to be a really exciting year for the club, with the new competition, the redevelopment at Piranha Park and a really young and motivated playing group. I honestly can’t wait for the season to start.”
“I certainly am excited to re-unite with some of my Richmond teammates. The hardest part of being at an AFL aligned club is competing for minimal spots with the teammates you train with all week. To be at Coburg with these boys, particularly JB who I have known since I was a young kid, is really exciting,” said Thompson.
Coburg GM Seb Spagnuolo was pleased to have finally secured the midfielder’s signature.
“Getting Charlie across to our team has been a work in progress for a number of years and we’re rapt to have him on board. In 2018, we first noticed Charlie playing in a Young Guns game, which at times aren’t the most competitive, but what we saw was Charlie’s leadership and will to compete and even though it was a game where there were players he’d never play with or even see ever again, Charlie encouraged teammates and lifted his team at every opportunity showing his excellent leadership character traits. Things like that do stand out and stay in the memory and since then we’ve watched him develop at Richmond further. With Charlie, Coburg fans will see a player that will work as hard as anyone on the field and compete to win as a midfielder or forward,” Spagnuolo said.
Over the next few days and weeks the club will continue to announce both re-singings and more new player signings as it prepares to succeed in 2021.
