Former elite junior Basketballer becomes a VFL Footballer!

20160630_171850Prior to the deadline for the VFL mid-season list lodgements, Coburg are delighted to announce Eastern Football League star Regan Grimwood has agreed to terms for the remainder of 2016, with a view towards the 2017 season having signed last evening.

Regan has primarily been a key component in the midfield for Montrose in the Division One Eastern Football League competition throughout its 2016 campaign.

Grimwood’s arrival to the VFL competition with Coburg caps off a remarkable rise having only resuming playing competitive Australian Rules Football in 2012 with Chirnside Park in the Eastern Football League’s Division Three competition having come from a basketball background, most notably playing representative basketball with the Kilsyth Cobras. Prior to that, he previously only had one season playing junior football with Mt.Evelyn, and was encouraged by a mate to make the switch back.

After beginning in the Under 19 division three competition of the Eastern Football League, Grimwood managed three consecutive best on ground performances and as a result made his senior debut due to his explosive start upon return.

Moving to Division One club Montrose for the 2015 season, Grimwood looked promising in the practice matches until damage to his clavicle ended his campaign before the real stuff began. However, this season he has established himself among the competitions elite, and in 2016 so far has managed to be named amongst the Demons’ Coaches best five times from seven matches.

Grimwood was recommended to the club by former Richmond and Melbourne Ruckman Andy Goodwin, the father of Tom, and had also been well endorsed by Montrose Playing Coach Brett Johnson, a former captain of Williamstown and who also represented Hawthorn and Carlton at AFL level.

Club General Manager Craig Lees was delighted to have Regan committed for the latter half of the 2016 season.

“Regan has come highly recommended to our football club, and after conversations with his coach Brett Johnson (ex Williamstown Captain) it was evident that Regan would’ve pursued VFL in 2017. In conversation with Regan and Brett over the past week, we were able to agree that Regan could have an impact this season and we are delighted for him to join our club. I must thank Montrose and Brett Johnson for allowing Regan to sign mid-season.”

Having also being courted by other VFL clubs, Regan looms likely to make his club debut this weekend against Sandringham in the Development League. We are looking forward to seeing what he can achieve for the rest of the 2016 season with the Lions.
