Coburg are pleased to announce the signing of another promising youngster from the Cannons in Jackson McDonald.
McDonald joins the likes of fellow Cannons team mate graduates Hayden Blythe, Jaidyn Owen and Jack Reaper to line up for the Lions in 2017.
Playing his junior football with Essendon District League side Aberfeldie, McDonald after managing 9 Cannons games in 2015 would go on and play 15 in 2016, averaging 17 possessions, three marks and four tackles a game. His performances would result in an invite to the State Combine held in October. His best performance of the season came against the Eastern Ranges in the middle of the season, with 34 possessions and 10 tackled as the Cannons avenged the round one loss.
One of the Cannons most consistent performers, he would eventually finish seventh in the Robert Hyde Medal. A member of the Cannons Leadership group, he would also be named in the Vic Metro Preliminary squad, however ultimately never managed a game. McDonald also won the St.Bernard’s first eighteen’s Best & Fairest as a year 11 student, and went onto captain the side the next year.
After two solid seasons in the TAC Cup system, Jackson is ready to make his mark in the VFL, and has been inspired by Coburg’s recent draft success, which led to him choosing Coburg as his destination for season 2017.
“Just missing out on the draft, I heard about the opportunity at Coburg, and seeing the boys like Lukey Ryan and Robbie Fox getting drafted gives you a bit of confidence that you can still make it I guess,” McDonald said.
List and Recruiting Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo was pleased to once again secure the signatures of another Calder Cannon youngster.
“Jackson is an exciting midfield prospect from the Calder Cannons. Jackson strengths are his ball winning ability and his will and determination to win contests,” Spagnuolo said.
“We’re very happy to have Jackson join our footy club for season 2017.”
Stay tuned for more announcements this week.
