Ben Barton becomes the seventh Calder Cannon from 2016 to join the Lions.
Barton managed just six games for Calder in 2016, often alternating between school football with Assumption College and TAC Cup level. While he couldn’t break back into the Calder side towards the back end of the season, Barton made two late season appearances in the Development League.
In the final home game of the season, Barton managed three goals against Frankston. Managing his junior football with Kilmore, Barton managed a few senior appearances for Broadford in 2016 and was one of the best players in their preliminary final loss.
Despite his light frame, Barton’s 194cm figure enables him to be a handy medium option either up forward or down back, and boasts reasonable mobility and pace considering his height. Having already pulled on the Lions jumper in 2016, Barton can’t wait to officially be part of the Lions in 2017.
“At the moment it’s about getting familiar with the program and trying to improve myself physically and gaining more knowledge, as well as improving my game.”
“I hope towards the end of the year I may come under consideration to get a senior game, and further build on from there,” Barton said.
List & Recruiting Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo was pleased to have the Assumption College graduate added to the list for 2017.
“Ben is a fantastic athlete that offers us great flexibility at his 193cm figure in ether forward or backline roles.”
“Ben will use his 1st season with Coburg to continue to learn and develop, which will help him be ready when an opportunity presents itself, “Spagnuolo said.
While we have signed yet another player, meaning we are another step closer to finalizing our 2017 list. We will keep all informed if anymore are made in the future.
