Sean Gregory has been named the first Lion of the Round this year, after an impressive performance against Collingwood last Saturday afternoon.
Notching up 12 disposals, 6 marks and 6 spoils, Gregory was key to the Lions’ side in their two-point loss to the Magpies, and felt he played his role for the team.
Going into his third year at the club and having suffered a frustrating injury-riddled season last year, Gregory managed to play the last four games of 2016 before putting in the hard work this preseason.
“It was very important to play those games last year to get some confidence in my body, and believe I belonged out there,” Gregory said.
“I really took that positivity into the preseason and have followed that up into the start of this season.”
This year, Gregory’s main focus is keeping his body fit, and to hopefully play a full season of footy.
“It’s about improving my defensive craft, and competing against gun forwards on a weekly basis.” Gregory continued.
This week Coburg will take on the Hawks at Box Hill City Oval, just two weeks after recording a draw with them in their final practice match.
“If we are to get over the line this time I think we need to bring a lot of pressure when they have the ball,” Gregory said.
“We need to be bold with the ball in hand, and effective with our tackling.”
While it was disappointing to not get the four points last weekend, Gregory believes that if the Lions can produce a positive brand of footy and take the game on this weekend then hopefully they can get over the line.
Head Senior Coach Peter German also spoke highly of Gregory, and looks forward to what he can bring this year.
“His body is now more durable for him to be prepared to play on the gun forwards,” Head Senior Coach Peter German said.
“He defended well against Lynch and Cox with discipline, and his teammates have gained a strong trust in him.” German continued.
The Seniors will kick off this Saturday afternoon at 2pm, with the Development team to start at 10:45am.
