Coburg’s Development Team have gone down to Box Hill by 78 points this morning in their ANZAC clash at Box Hill City Oval.
In the first quarter the Hawks had some inaccurate shots on goal (3 goals 8 behinds) but got on the scoreboard early, with the Lions struggling to catch their lead and unfortunately finishing the day 9.10 (64) to Box Hill’s 21.16 (142).
Up by 33 points at half time, the Hawks continued their dominance into the third term, kicking seven goals to Coburg’s two.
Some exciting passages of play gave the Lions’ motivation, but were too far behind to catch Box Hill who pushed their lead to 62 points at 3/4 time.
Costly turnovers and missed targets left the Hawks with prime opportunities and a 24 to 10 inside-50 count, proving their dominance with another seven-goal term to finish the day.
Back-to-back Coburg goals from Brandon Bailey and Cassidy Haberfield in the final quarter showed what the Lions’ were capable of, but had left it a bit too late.
Cameron McRorie kicked three majors, while Ricky Schraven and Hayden Blythe (a late inclusion replacing Liam Kidd) booted two each.
Luke Bunker (28 disposals) put in a solid performance as the leading ball-getter, while Zak Wunhym and Cassidy Haberfield collected 21 and 20 disposals respectively.
Josh Iacobaccio and Mitch Conn returned from injury, while Jack Sandric went up against his former club and Tom Wallis played his first game in Coburg colours.
Next week will see the Development Lions go up against the Northern Blues on Sunday morning at Piranha Park, with the first bounce at 11:00am.
