A late burst of goals from the Coburg Seniors which got the margin down from 43 points at three-quarter time to just 9 points was not enough to beat the Northern Blues yesterday afternoon at Preston City Oval.
The Lions managed to kick six goals to the Blues’ one in the final term, and possibly could’ve taken the lead if it weren’t for some missed shots on goal.
While they left their run a bit too late, the Coburg boys fought hard to get themselves back in the game, the final score being 13.13 (91) to the Blues’ 14.16 (100).
In the 154th Battle of the Bell, Coburg started strong and applied the pressure early, keeping the scores tight throughout the opening term.
Four lead changes in the second quarter meant the Lions had to be on their feet, with the Blues kicking three straight to the Blues pushed their lead to 15 points at the main break.
Some turnovers in dangerous territory, including inside the Lion’s defensive-50, led to Northern Blues getting their hands on the ball, while some missed handballs and inaccurate kicking also meant the opposition could capitalise.
Going up against 20-odd AFL-listed players is no easy task, but the Coburg Seniors’ efforts today proved they are capable and on the right track for a victory soon.
Vice-Captain Peter McEvoy was a standout with four goals and named best on ground, while 23rd man and Calder Cannon tall Aidan Tilley impressed in his debut VFL Senior game, kicking two majors and taking a great screamer in the final term.
The Lions’ major ball-getters were Nick Mellington (25 disposals), Luke Bunker (22 disposals) and Mick Mattingly (19 disposals).
Come down to Piranha Park next Saturday from 2pm to see Coburg take on Port Melbourne.
