Despite a strong and hard-fought second half, the Development Lions have gone down by one-point in their clash against Sandringham Zebras this morning at Trevor Barker Oval, finishing 14.9 (93) to 14.10 (94).
Kicking 6 goals to 2 in the third term meant the Lions were only trailing by a goal at the last change, but just couldn’t get the ball inside-50 in the dying minutes.
Fast running and quick handballs were effective when they worked, but a few slip-ups in the corridor presented opportunities for the Zebras’ to capitalise.
With Head Coach Paul Kennedy’s final message just to play “simple footy”, Coburg’s Development side did their best in the agonisingly close loss.
Jean-Luc Velissaris from the Calder Cannons was arguably best-on-ground booting six goals from just 14 disposals, including three consecutive ones in the final quarter.
Daman Aujla as skipper played his role across the ground, with Matt Merlo and Ricky Schraven also making an impact in their respective zones, all finishing with 23 possessions.
Alex Mioni wasn’t far behind as a leading ball-getter, finishing with 20 disposals and one goal.
Next week the Development Lions have a bye, but the action continues when the Coburg Seniors take on Geelong at Simonds Stadium.
