Coming off the back of a bye last week, Coburg’s Senior side have gone down to reigning VFL Premiers Footscray by 60 points yesterday afternoon at Whitten Oval, despite a convincing final term of footy.
Strong winds towards the Geelong Road end of the ground and playing with only three fit men on the bench made it hard for Coburg to catch Footscray’s firing start, the final scores 18.9 (117) to 8.9 (57).
The Lions’ defensive pressure and fight for possession meant no goal was kicked until the 17th minute mark of the first term.
But all of Coburg’s hard work became undone when the Bulldogs blitzed six goals in 10 minutes of play.
The second quarter saw the breeze go to the Lions’ advantage, adding their first majors to the scoreboard.
Coburg had a much quieter third term with a single point kicked, with Footscray controlling much of the game.
The final term did see much better play from the Lions however, kicking five goals to one by using handballs and long kicks to get the ball inside 50 quickly.
Second-gamer Rivva Karpany managed his first Senior goal towards the end of the last quarter, while debutant Stuart Donnelly played his part in the backline.
Major ball-winners included James el Moussalli who recorded 30 touches, followed by Liam Hunt with 29 and Luke Bunker with 28.
Next week sees Coburg face another away game, this time against Casey Demons at Casey Fields on Sunday at 2pm.
Come down to show your support and get behind the boys before the season ends!
