Left with just two fit men on the bench, the Coburg Seniors had a dismal day at Fortburn Stadium on Saturday afternoon, going down to Port Melbourne by 160 points.
Losing Sean Gregory and Luke Bunker in the second quarter, and then Captain Tom Goodwin in the third didn’t make it any easier for the Lions; finishing the day 5.7 (37) to 30.17 (197).
Coburg brought a high intensity to the first quarter, playing with a “nothing to lose” attitude and producing an exciting contest.
After kicking the first two goals through Hisham Kerbatieh and Keenan Posar, the home side caught on to the Lion’s playing style, matching their quick start and taking the lead.
Mitch Conn’s (17 disposals) intercept mark half-way through the first provided Michael Ercolano with a goal opportunity, to which he capitalised.
The Burgers were then kept goal-less in the second and score-less in the third.
Vice-captain Peter McEvoy broke the Lions’ drought 10 minutes into the final term with a major of his own, with Kerbatieh also kicking another to finish on two.
Ben Allan (24), Nick Mellington (20) and Blake Mullane (19) were among Coburg’s leading ball-getters.
Next week the Lion’s take on North Ballarat for their last home game of the season.
