Final Fight for Resilient Coburg Seniors

The Coburg Seniors finished their 2017 season on Sunday afternoon, defeated by Richmond VFL by 86 points at Punt Road Oval.
Also Head Coach Peter German’s final game, the Lions came out fighting in the first term, but succumbed to Richmond’s pressure to finish the day 4.9 (33) to 17.17 (119).
The first term was a highly contested ball-game, which saw only minor scores added before Liam Hunt kicked our first in the 23rd minute of play.
Taking a narrow four-point lead into the first break, the home side upped the intensity and blitzed seven goals to two in the next term.
The earlier inaccurate Lions’ kicking hurt them, as Richmond continued to make the most of their opportunities in the second half.
Vice-Captain Peter McEvoy stood up in skipper Tom Goodwin’s absence (knee injury), while Hunt yet again recorded the highest disposals (27).
Keenan Posar and Nick Mellington also both notched up 24.
After the match, Peter German addressed the playing group with some departing advice, and thanked them for their resilience during the year.
“You have to respect the competition, yourself and your teammates; the work that needs to be put in to be effective at this level is massive, and we’ve got such a long way to go,” German said.
“I reckon we’ve done a lot of hours this year, but that’s only the beginning.”
“Its been a tough year, but we’re a really young group, and I thank every one of you for your commitment; I’ve said it a million times, but our resilience this year has been outstanding.”
“This is still Coburg, that’s the most important thing, and we want to still be Coburg for a long time to come.”
We thank all our Coburg members, supporters, sponsors and family for your ongoing support this season, and hope to see you at our Best and Fairest Presentation Night on Thursday September 28th.
