As seen in last nights edition of “The Roar,” the Coburg Football Club are delighted to announce our newest football department appointments, including Todd Beames as High Performance Manager, Ben Osborne as Backline Coach, and the re-appointment of Andrew Sturgess as Midfield Coach.
They will work together under new Senior Coach Leigh Adams for the 2018 Peter Jackson VFL season.
Todd Beames has spent the past two seasons as High Performance Manager of the Calder Cannons in the TAC Cup Competition, so will be a familiar face to some of our players.
With a background as a local football player, Beames hopes to earn the trust of the playing group quickly, which in turn helps his job become a lot easier.
“I am looking forward to building some strong relationships with both the players and staff, where we are all working towards a common goal,” he said.
“Obviously in any high performance role, you are aiming to implement processes that allow the coaches a full squad to pick from week in week out.”
“With such a young list, it is exciting to be able to help them progress along their football journey, and hopefully we can get the boys up and running nice and early for a big 2018 season, (with hopefully) a few wins along the way,” Beames continued.
Ben Osborne joins the club as Backline Coach, after playing 220 games and winning two premierships (2001 Div. 3 and 2009 Div. 2) for South Croydon in the Eastern Football League.
After retiring from playing in 2014, he moved into an assistant coaching position also at South Croydon and was part of this year’s Division 1 Premiership.
“I’m really looking forward to working with a young, talented playing group and coaching staff,” he said.
“I hope to bring a really positive environment where the players want to turn up to training, and enjoy learning the new game style we will bring with us.”
“Its really exciting to be learning off everyone in the organisation and then passing on my strengths to all involved as well; I get a great community feeling around this club but have also been so impressed with the professionalism of the board and the football department in the build up to the 2018 season.”
A more familiar face around the club, Andrew ‘Sturg’ Sturgess enters his second season at Coburg as an assistant & Midfield coach.
He played 21 games for Coburg in 2014 and 2015 and was part of the leadership group, but spent time with the coaching staff in 2015 while recovering from an injury.
After returning to the club this year, Sturgess’ ultimate achievement as a coach is “assisting our players in reaching their highest potential both professionally and personally”.
“I believe my role as a coach and a human being is to not only assist the players in becoming the best footballers they can be, but to work towards holistic development so when they leave Coburg or football altogether, they are better people than when they first started out,” he continued.
Next season, one thing Sturgess looks forward to the most is the challenge of the entire club coming together to form a bond that will become a competitive advantage.
“I think when things aren’t going well, it’s easy to fall into self preservation mode,” he said.
“For our club to continue to improve, we need to look out for each others best interests before our own, and trust that by thinking that way, someone is looking out for our best interest also which raises the levels of the whole club collectively.”
