Coburg’s Coaching panel for 2018 has been finalised with the confirmed appointment of former North Melbourne listed player Tom Curran, who will coach our forwards this year.
Curran is excited by the opportunity to work under his former teammate Leigh Adams, having been forced to retire from Football at the end of 2014 following his time in the AFL that was ruined by foot injuries. Curran was drafted to North Melbourne at pick 40 in the 2011 draft, however only would manage nine games of VFL in his time at Arden Street.
However, after returning to play a few games in the VAFA with Collegians in 2017, Curran decided it was the right opportunity for him to take up, following getting back that feel from returning to a club with his old school mates. Beginning over a week ago, Curran cannot wait to see what season 2018 brings for the club & his own development as a coach.
“I’m looking forward to coaching against strong opposition every week and putting out a strong brand of footy that makes them think twice about coming up against Coburg throughout the season.”
“When I was approached for the role, the thought of embracing a new challenge was really tempting. I’ve always loved footy & have learnt a lot in my time as a player, and unfortunately with all my injuries, I can’t play anymore. So the next logical step is coaching and to learn and grow under Leigh was an opportunity that I couldn’t pass up,” Curran said.
Curran’s appointment follows the appointment of Ben Osborne as Backline Coach, & the reappointment of Andrew Sturgess as Midfield Coach.
GM Sebastian Spagnuolo was please to have finalized the clubs Coaching Staff for the 2018 season with Currans addition.
“The club is really pleased with the coaching group that senior coach Leigh Adams has been able to assemble.
“Ben Osborne comes to the club with a wealth of local footy experience which included working with Leigh in South Croydon’s 2017 Premiership year, he’s already had a really positive impact with our defenders and is a fantastic communicator.”
“We’re pleased that Andrew Sturgess is returning for a 2nd year as midfield coach at the club. Andrew is also now a level 2 accredited coach and will be better for the experience of coaching our midfield unit in 2017. The players love working with Andrew and as a former Lion himself he knows the requirements of the level better than most.”
“Tom Curran recently joined our program and and has already impacted with our forward group in a great manner. As a club we’re keen to help Tom commence his coaching journey. Tom was listed at North Melbourne with Leigh and although injury cut his AFL playing journey short, he was able to get great access to the AFL system which should him in great stead.”
“I see the youthfulness of the coaching group as a really positive thing. Being not too dissimilar in age to our players and coming from similar or higher levels of football should mean that they are really relateable to eachother. Not only will our coaches communicate the game plan, tactics, and provide football education to the players, but they will also play a lead hand with player welfare in 2018 which should lead to really strong player/coach relationships,” Spagnuolo said.
