Leadership group member Nick Mellington will play his 50th VFL game this weekend when Coburg host Collingwood on Vicki Cleary Day.
Mellington played TAC Cup for the Murray Bushrangers where he was captain, before moving to Melbourne to pursue VFL opportunities with Richmond. He came to Piranha Park in 2017 where he played 15 games as a midfielder, resulting in a top 10 best and fairest finish.
His move to Coburg was based on more opportunity at VFL level, which he has certainly achieved, becoming a regular in the Lions midfield.
“I have loved being here since the day I got here,” he said.
While some may view their 50th game as a milestone, Mellington’s sole focus is on winning.
“I may be proud of it (playing 50 games) later in life but for now, all I want to do is win games with Coburg and I don’t care about personal achievements so much.”
“I’ve only played in one win with Coburg…I’m desperate for more winning moments,” he said.
Despite being one of the more experienced members of Coburg’s team, Mellington is still trying to improve his game.
“My kicking and speed are two things I worked really hard on leading into this year,” he said, “These areas can take my game to the next level.”
Although Coburg are still winless in 2018, Mellington doesn’t think the team is far off.
“This season has been one that has had many changes; with new coaches, new game plan, and new players.”
“It’s only a matter of time until we start to find our feet as a group and start winning.”
Come Saturday, Coburg will be up against an in-form Collingwood team who are currently sitting second on the ladder.
“This week, we need relentless pressure for four quarters to win the game,” Mellington said.
“It is a massive day for our club and it’s a chance to show everyone what Coburg is all about with the game being on national TV.”
Be sure to see Mellington and the rest of the Lions in action on Saturday afternoon at Piranha Park, with free entry for Vicki Cleary Day. If you are unable to make it to the ground, the match will be televised on 7mate.
