A smaller group of Lions lined up for their respective local clubs this weekend, as many sides saw a bye for the two interleague matches that featured two Coburg representatives as well.
Mitch Conn played his part for the Ballarat Football League when they took on the Goulburn Valley Football League at the MCG on Saturday, and were in it for most of the game. Ultimately, the GVFL were too strong and able to run home with the 22 point win.
Josh Fox competed for the Southern Football League also on Saturday in Boort, where he stood tall and strong with a match-winning five goal performance to help his side hold off a spirited North Central Football League fightback, finishing nine-point victors.
Around the local grounds, Lachie Mitchell and Essendon Doutta Stars went up against fellow Coburg midfielder Ben Allan and Pascoe Vale in a high-scoring EDFL match; with the latter coming out on top with a 42 point win. Mitchell managed to impact the scoreboard with a goal despite the loss.
Also in the EDFL, Tom Condon and Logan Morey both appeared for Strathmore, taking on Avondale Heights in two separate divisions. Condon booted two goals in the 42 point Premier Division triumph, while Morey was named among the best-on-ground in the close 13 point Premier Reserves win.
Staying with the EDFL, Brad Bernacki and East Sunbury jumped to first-place on the ladder after a five-goal win over Coburg Districts. Bernacki also contributed with one major.
Over in the Eastern Football League, Hisham Kerbatieh was able to add three goals to the scoreboard for Doncaster East, in their nine point win over Park Orchards.
This Saturday sees Coburg take on last year’s grand finalists Richmond, at the Swinburne Centre (Punt Road Oval) in the curtain-raiser to the MCG game. The first bounce is at 10:45am. Stay tuned during the week for more on team selection, and early next week for more on our Local Lions.
