Local League Lions: Round 15

BY BROOKE VARNEY.
While Coburg managed to record their first win of the season, there were many more Lions who put in great performances when representing their local clubs over the weekend.
In the EDFL, Tom Wallis and Lachy Mitchell both played their part for Essendon Doutta Stars in a 33-point win over West Coburg, with Wallis also named among the Stars best in what was also their first win of the 2018 season.
Tom Condon and Strathmore also had a taste of victory, narrowly beating ladder-leaders Maribyrnong Park by just five points. Condon managed two goals in the close match. Unfortunately Jay O’Donoghue and Glenroy weren’t as lucky, going down to Avondale Heights by just under six goals.
Moving to the Ballarat Football League, Mark Orr featured in a close four-point win over Redan, while Lachlan Watkins and Melton South couldn’t get over the top of Sunbury; defeated by 26 points. Watkins was named among the better players on the day as he continued to show outstanding leadership.
In the Eastern Football League, Jack Sandric and Adam Swierzbiolek paired up for East Ringwood, and despite the 10-goal loss to Blackburn, were both named among the best on ground for their efforts. Alex Mioni and Norwood were able to come away with the chocolates however, in their huge 115-point win over Knox.
Over in the Northern Football League, four Lions were represented but this time on opposing teams; Josh Iacobaccio and Daman Aujla for Bundoora, and Aidan Tilley and Mark Kovacevic for West Preston-Lakeside. It was Iacobaccio and Aujla with bragging rights in the end, 20-point victors. Kovacevic featured among his side’s best, impressing with his ruck work following a week off due to injury whilst Tilley tried hard playing down back.
Sam Binion and Montmorency were defeated by North Heidelberg by 64 points, with Binion being named as one of the day’s better players. Latest signing Lachlan Wilson was a bit luckier, kicking two goals in Heidelberg’s 28-point win over Hurstbridge. Wilson was also named among the best on ground.
To finish up the weekend, the Ovens & Murray Football League, Logan Morey and Yarrawonga were able to storm home 41-point victors over the Wangaratta Magpies.
