The Coburg Football Club is pleased to announce it will be one of the first clubs to trial new rule adjustments this weekend in its match for points against Werribee.
The proposed rule changes will see the goalsquares extended from nine metres long to 18 metres long, and an introduction of starting positions at each centre bounce.
This means that at the beginning of each quarter and after every goal, there will need to be six forwards in their forward-50, including one player in the goalsquare; six defenders in their defensive-50, including one player in the goalsquare; and six midfielders, four of which are in the centre square, and two wingmen lined up on the side of the square.
Any breach of the starting positions rule will see a free kick against in the middle of the square, but the same rules apply for kick-ins; stepping over the line will result in a ball-up at the top of the goalsquare.
General Manager Sebastian Spagnuolo is excited for Coburg FC to be part of this trial, and hopes the club can supply important feedback which will help grow the game even more.
“We’d been working with AFL Victoria for a couple of weeks on this idea; initially we raised our interest for a post-season trial much like the way we trialled AFLX for the AFL in 2016,” he said.
“When we were offered the chance to trial these new adjustments in-season, we simply jumped at the chance as it provides the VFL competition and our club with some added exposure.”
“We’re excited to be part of the first official trial this week against Werribee and we encourage as many people as possible to get to Piranha Park to see how the game plays out with the adjustments in place.”
The first bounce for this Saturday’s match against Werribee will be at 2pm.
