Coburg has announced its team to take on Collingwood this weekend. The Lions will be at
home at Piranha Park for their first game of 2019, with the first bounce on Saturday at
2:00pm.
Coburg ended its pre-season with a victory over Frankston last week to finish up its
preparations for season 2019.
There are a number of new faces that will be running out in the blue and red this season
with this weeks’ team featuring up to ten new Lions players to the team that played the
final game of 2018.
All six members of the Lions leadership group have been named on the field, highlighted by
co-captains Peter McEvoy (centre half forward) and Ryan Exon (half back flank).
New recruit Jonty Neaves, from Eaglehawk in the Bendigo Football League, has been named
at full forward after an impressive showing over the pre-season practice matches.
2018 Northern Knights captain Braedyn Gillard will also make his Coburg debut, being
named on-ball alongside Josh Guthrie and ruckman Adam Swierzbiolek.
Another new recruit, but not a stranger to the VFL is Steve Stroobants who will make his
Coburg debut following 74 VFL games with Bendigo and North Melbourne.
Kane Noonan, Brodie Foster, Tom Meagher, Harry Simington and Xavier Fry could all be in
line for a potential debut also, having been named on the extended bench.
Muhammad Saad will also make his VFL debut after being named Coburg’s 23 rd man for
Saturday’s clash. Saad has previously played TAC Cup for the Calder Cannons and played
NEAFL for the Gold Coast Suns. The name will sound familiar to Coburg fans, as brother
Adam won the Lions best and fairest in 2014 and now plays for Essendon in the AFL.
Be sure to be at Piranha Park on Saturday as the Lions hope to kick off 2019 with a win over
the Magpies!
