Lions named to take on North Melbourne

BY JARRAD GARDNER

After a well-deserved week off to freshen up, the Lions to take on North Melbourne in round 16 of the 2019 VFL season have been named and we welcome our latest debutant Tye Browning.

Tye will make his Coburg debut at Piranha Park this Sunday, named as the 23rdman for the clash.

Browning joined the Lions mid-season from the Calder Cannons where he averaged 18.2 disposals and 5.4 marks across eight matches in the NAB League.

He has also impressed for Craigieburn in the Essendon District Football League in recent weeks, named in the best players in three out of his five matches.

Tyson Lever also comes into the side however Sam Binion will unfortunately miss through injury.

Braedyn Gillard, Muhammad Saad and Jack Sandric all join the extended bench alongside Brodie Foster, Fletcher Carroll, Lachlan Watkins, Ben Reddick and Hedley Smith.

Defender Liam Whelan claimed Lion of the Round honours in round 14, with a strong performance, not wavering all day against Essendon’s tall forwards and will look to back that performance up agsint his former club North Melbourne VFL.

The back six remains unchanged once again, as Whelan is joined by co-captain Ryan Exon, Tyson Lever, Jesse Corigliano, Harry Nolan and Josh Guthrie.

In a tough outing prior to the bye against Essendon, Lochie Dickson continued his strong 2019 season, racking up 32 disposals and kicking a goal in the defeat.

He will start on the ball along with Marcus Lentini and Luke Bunker who both had 28 touches in round 14 while laying six and seven tackles respectively.

Adam Swierzbiolek will start in the ruck while Jack Murphy and Jackson McDonald round on the midfield group, starting on the wings.

Steven Stroobantsbooted two goals in our loss to Essendon while Mitch Podhajski and Pete McEvoy both kicked one apiece.

They will be joined by Mark Baker, Kane Noonan and Josh Weightman in the forward 50 against North Melbourne.

North Melbourne currently sit just one spot above the Lions on the VFL ladder, with three wins so far in 2019. In round 15 they were defeated by Essendon by 50-points.

This is the first time we will face North Melbourne in 2019, in our most recent encounter in round 13 of the 2018 season they ran out 57-point victors at Avalon Airport Oval.

Strong performers on that day were Lentini (29 disposals, six tackler), Weightman, Guthrie and Dickson

We hope to see all our Lions fans at Piranha Park on Sunday to cheer our boys on! First bounce is at 12:30pm.
Join us as we make a stand to end violence against women as we host Vicki Cleary Day, a gold coin donation will be accepted for entry, and there will be a tribute to Vicki from 12:20pm.
