Local League Lions: Round 20
A bye in the penultimate round of the 2019 season saw almost two thirds of the list head back to their local clubs, some with a view to towards the finals and avoiding relegation.
 
VAFA Premier Division
Luke Di Lizio kicked a goal for St.Bernards, however it wasn’t enough as they suffered a narrow loss to Wesley Collegians at home.
 
Essendon District Football League
Jonty Neaves was joined at Glenroy by Tyson Lever, Jackson McDonald and Jack Sandric as they took on Essendon Doutta Stars at Sewell Reserve. The Roy’s notched up an epic come from behind win, after a goal less first quarter which saw them down by 43 points at the first break. Lever contributed with 4 goals and was named amongst the best while McDonald and Neaves also hit the scoreboard. The win secured Glenroy’s Premier Division status for 2020 with 2 rounds remaining, a remarkable effort considering their injury toll.
Ben Reddick and Lucas Cavallaro both fronted up for Strathmore again, as the Mores got the job done over Airport West. The win saw Strathmore move up to 4thon the ladder, a game clear over Greenvale who lost to Keilor.
In Division One, Tye Browning returned to Cragieburn and was named best on ground in their big win over Hillside.
 
Northern Football League
Tyson Old continued his strong form for Northcote Park, but it wasn’t enough as the Cougars suffered a 55-point loss to Hurstbridge.
Montmorency with Braedyn Gillard and Sam Binion (for the first time in 2019) had an eight-point win over MacLeod at DeWinton Reserve. Adam Swierzbiolek made his debut for MacLeod and was named his sides best player; while Brodie Foster and Jack Baker were named among their best. Mo Saad continued to make an impact up forward with three goals while Harry Simington also showed good signs. Montmorency’s win saw them leapfrog MacLeod and Northcote Park into fifth place.
Fletcher Carroll kicked a goal for Heidelberg in their top of the table clash with Greensborough, however Greensborough were too good winning by 34 points.
Aidan Tilley continued his good form down back at West Preston-Lakeside had a 42-point win over Bundoora at Yulong Reserve, as they continue their resurgence in the second half of 2019.
Marcus Lentini made a rare appearance for Diamond Creek, however his presence wasn’t enough as they lost by 4 points to St.Marys.
Hedley Smith kicked a goal in Fitzroy Stars’ 24-point win over Watsonia, as they continue to finish off their season on a strong note.
 
Eastern Football League
Lochie Dickson made a rare appearance for Norwood, kicking 2 goals in their loss to Blackburn at Morton Park.
Kane Noonan returned to Mooroolbark being named amongst his sides best in its ten-point loss to East Ringwood, also kicking a goal.
Tom Meagher also kicked a goal for Upper Ferntree Gully, but it wasn’t enough to prevent them from going down to Knox.
 
Riddell District Football League
Billy Cannolo kicked 11 goals in Rupertswood’s big win over Rockbank.
 
Goulburn Valley Football League
Jack Murphy kicked three goals for Seymour in a 27-point win over Mooroopna, which sees them now in fourth place on the ladder.
 
Ovens and Murray Football League
Will Donaghey played for Wodonga Raiders in their 81-point loss at home to Albury.
Stay tuned for this Thursday’s team selection for our last game for the season in Round 21 this Saturday August 24 when we take on Footscray at Piranha Park, with the first bounce at 12:30PM. Not only will this be our last game of the season but the last game at Piranha Park as we currently know it, until the 2021 season with redevelopments taking place throughout the 2020 season.
