Local League Lions: Round Twenty One

Local League Lions: Round Twenty One
Round Twenty one of the 2019 season may have been the final round of the season, but it wasn’t for most of our players playing local, with some seasons still yet to end and others with a view towards the finals.

VAFA Premier Division
Luke Di Lizio managed a goal in St.Bernards’ 39-point loss to Old Melburnians at Elsternwick Park, bringing his tally to 15 goals from 16 games in 2019. St. Bernards will finish off their 2019 campaign at home next week against St.Kevins.

Essendon District Football League
Jonty Neaves again appeared for Glenroy, as they went down to Maribyrnong Park by 21 points at the Monk Oval. The Roys finish off their season next week up the road against Aberfeldie at Clifton Park.
Lucas Cavallaro and Ben Reddick appeared for Strathmore again as they defeated Greenvale by 6 points at Lebanon Reserve. The win saw Strathmore move up to third place and secure a finals spot, ending Greenvale’s season in the process. The Mores play Essendon Doutta Stars at Nipper Jordan Oval before heading into the finals.

Northern Football League
Fletcher Carroll and Heidelberg went head to head with Tyson Old and Northcote Park in the last round of the 2019 Northern Football League Division One season. Carroll managed a goal and was named amongst his side’s best players in the big 49-point win which saw the Tigers secure a second placed finish on the ladder. Heidelberg will play North Heidelberg in next weeks first qualifying final. Northcote Park ended its season in 7thplace with seven wins.
In the Grand Final rematch of 2018, West Preston Lakeside withAidan Tilley coming up against Jack Baker and Mo Saad for MacLeod. It was the Roosters who came from behind to win by 5 points at DeWinton Park, securing 4thspot on the ladder- a remarkable achievement considering the slow start to the season. West Preston Lakeside will play Montmorency in next weeks elimination final. MacLeod finished the season in sixth place with seven wins and a draw.
Hedley Smith and Fitzroy Stars finished off their improved season on a positive note, with a 29-point win over St.Mary’s at the Sir Douglas Nicholls Oval. The Stars finished the season in 6thplace with eight wins missing the finals by a game and a half, a huge improvement from the two wins recorded in 2018.

Ovens and Murray Football League
Will Donaghey kicked a goal for Wodonga Raiders in their big 71-pointwin over North Albury at Bunton Park. The Raiders sealed 5thspot on the ladder and will play Myrtleford in an elimination final next week.
